چکیده

A treadmill exercise test was carried out on 154 male subjects aged 15-25 years who gave a history of mild asthma in childhood, and on 31 similarly aged control subjects. The results were expressed as an exercise lability index, (ELI), based on measurement of FEV. The mean ELI of the control group was 7.6%, range 2.9-12.2% and a positive result in the asthma subjects was an ELI greater than 15%. Seventy five of the asthma subjects were found to have been asymptomatic for a year or more (group 1) and, in 15 of them (20%) the test was positive. The remaining 79 were currently symptomatic, or had been symptomatic within a year (group 2), and in 52 of these (66%), the test was positive. The difference between the two results was significant, p greater than or equal to 0.001. We believe this observation suggests that exercise induced asthma (EIA) cannot be demonstrated in the majority of asthmatics who are in remission.

Dyspnoea perception during clinical remission of atopic asthma.

Symptoms of atopic asthma often disappear around puberty. The authors recently demonstrated that this clinical remission is accompanied with ongoing airways inflammation in most subjects. The discrepancy between lack of symptoms and persistent airway inflammation suggests that perception of the symptoms is unclear. In the present study, young adults in clinical remission of atopic asthma assign...

Can AMP induce sputum eosinophils, even in subjects with complete asthma remission?

BACKGROUND The definition of "clinical asthma remission" is based on absence of symptoms and use of medication. However, in the majority of these subjects airway inflammation is still present when measured. In the present study we investigated whether "complete asthma remission", additionally defined by the absence of bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and the presence of a normal lung functio...

Different Gene Expressions of Alpha and Beta Glucocorticoid Receptors in Asthmatics

The response to glucocorticoids (GCs) therapy classifies severe refractory asthma (SRA) and mild asthma, so the glucocorticoid receptors (GCRs) gene expression may be involved in SRA pathogenesis. Thus, it is aimed to compare the expression levels of two GCR isoforms (GCRα and GCRβ) in SRA, mild asthmatics, and healthy controls. Total RNA was isolated from the peripheral blood mononuclear lymph...

Characteristics of asthma in the elderly.
